Hey, reader peeps!

I know it’s been a while. Life happened. Not quite a curve ball or a lemon, but something big and drastic enough that I’m trying to figure out where and how writing and blogging and other things fit in.

I saw a cool idea for a post on Nadine Brandes’ blog. She did a post where she listed 10 truths and 2 lies about herself and the readers are supposed to guess which things are the lies.

And since I have gotten new followers and have some old ones who probably don’t know everything… I’m going to do the same.

So, guess away! I’ll post the answers next week.

Perfect Date Tag– Matthew Cloud

Hi, reader-peeps!

I have a special post today.

A few Twitter friends and I came up with the idea to do a few Valentine’s Day posts with our characters. Keep an eye out for another post in a few days!

Today I’m doing a Perfect Date post, advertising why this character would be such a good date. This character is from my WIP, Dragon Races.




Matthew Cole Cloud. He goes by Cloud or occasionally Matt or Matthew.

How does he look? Eyes, hair, any tattoos or scars. What’s his style?

Cloud is 23 and he’s 6’1″.  He has messy blond hair, blue eyes, and he has a couple of burn scars because he is a dragon racer. His style is casual– jeans, baseball shirt, sneakers, though he would dress up a little for a date.

What kind of music? What kind of food?

Cloud likes just about any kind of music, but he is secretly a huge fan of musicals. His favorite is Hamilton.

Cloud doesn’t have a favorite food. He’ll eat about anything.

What’s his family like?

Cloud’s family is… dead. His mom died when he was little. His dad remarried and then he died later. And then Cloud’s step-mom was bad. It was a Cinderella-story, really, without the fairy godmother.

Why he would be a great date?

Despite the fact that Cloud is a bit egotistic at times, he is really sweet and would want to make sure his date was always happy.

Things he values:

Time. He doesn’t want to waste a minute of his life and wants to live to the fullest. He also values honesty.

What he would do for a first date?

Going out for a coffee or lunch is his idea of a good first date. It’s a safe, no pressure thing that doesn’t even have to be called a date.

Looking for long term relationship or just a quick date?

Cloud wants long term relationship, but doesn’t want to commit until he knows his date well. He doesn’t want to make the same mistake his dad did when he married Cloud’s step-mom but hardly knew her.

We’ve had our pros, what are the cons?

Cloud milks his Cinderella backstory for all the fame he can. He is constantly in media, including tabloids. If you date him, you’d be in the media, too.

Flowers , chocolate, or promises he doesn’t intend to keep?

Flowers to start. Chocolate would come later in the relationship. And promises wouldn’t be made at all– Cloud knows that promises can’t always be kept, but he wants to do everything he can to be truthful and honorable.

I have no photo of Cloud, but I have a cute song and if Cloud could write songs, he’d write a similar one.

Inquisitive Wednesday– It’s Been a While…

It’s Inquisitive Wednesday! On IW, I answer 5-10 questions, be they from awards, tags, or reader input.

It’s been a while since I’ve been tagged in anything. Which I’m partially thankful for. (You can only accept the Liebster if you have under 200 followers.)

Also, three posts in as many days. Crazy.

Anyway! I have been tagged/nominated in the Sunshine Blogger Award!

So. I was nominated by Luke (thank you, sir!). And he chose eleven interesting questions for me to answer.

Here we go!

1.  If you could only read one fictional book for the rest of your life, what would it be?

What kind of question is this?

I honestly don’t know. I think either The Raven Boys or The Lord of the Rings or A Wrinkle in Time.

2.  What type of computer do you use for blogging?

PC. Toshiba.

3.  What was the last album you listened to straight through?

I honestly don’t know the answer to that.

I think it was A Hollens Family Christmas by Peter Hollens. (Yes, I am already listening to Christmas music and have been for weeks. Shush.)

4.  What is your favorite holiday sweet?

Haystacks or Peppermint Bark.

5.  Are you known for making a signature dish or food?  If so, what is it?

No, I’m not. And I cook pretty much all the food at my house.

6.  Would you consider your handwriting to be sloppy or neat (or somewhere in between)?

In between. Years ago, it would have been sloppy. Just a few months ago, it was neat. Now it’s in between.

7.  What is the awesomest-looking book you own, and why?

Either the Percy Jackson myth books (because illustrated myths told by a snarky teenager) or Inkheart because I had to put a new cover on it myself (for those of you have read Inkheart, you know there is some irony in this) or The Hobbit (because it’s big and green and has Smaug on the front) or Blue Lily, Lily Blue (have you seen that cover? It’s self-explanatory).

8.  Name your three biggest fandoms.

Dragons (yeah that’s not a fandom, but that includes ALL THE DRAGONS so shush), Lord of the Rings, and Mistborn. (Also The Raven Cycle, okay, shutting up now…).

9.  Favorite childhood movie?

Beauty and the Beast. Or The Lion King. Mulan is good, too.

10.  Pizza or tacos?

It depends on what kind of pizza and how often I’ve had pizza recently. I have actually gotten sick of pizza before and that is not good.

11.  Name three books that everyone on earth should read.

The Lord of the RingsA Wrinkle in Time, and… hmm.

Beautiful People– One Last Post for LASER

Hi, reader-peeps.

As the title suggests, this is the last time I will be posting a LASER post. At least for the foreseeable future. For right now, I am considering LASER a story for myself. Something like fan fiction of characters I didn’t know very well from another story. And if nothing else, it helped me figure out who those characters are so if I ever want to write them again (or their children, more likely), I know who they are.

All that being said, I said in the last Beautiful People tag post, I wanted to do this tag with two more characters from LASER, who never got a spotlight in this tag on their own: Gavin MacBay and Elden Carp.


Let’s start with Gavin.

He is Riley’s boyfriend and comes from a very superstitious family.

I do not have an accurate picture of him.

How did you come up with this character?

Gavin really just appeared. For that matter, so did Riley. I knew I wanted my MC Isabella to have a best friend and that was Riley. I knew Riley had a boyfriend. That was Gavin.

Have they ever been starving? Why? And what did they eat to break the fast?

No. I don’t think so.

Do they have a talent or skill that they’re proud of?

Gavin used to build Rube Goldberg contraptions when he was a kid.

List 3 things that would make them lose their temper.

Gavin is honestly a pretty calm person in general. But someone endangering his family or friends would make him angry to say the least. Someone acting stupidly also angers him.

What is their favourite type of weather? Least favorite?

Sunshine is his favorite (hot enough to going swimming is the best). Least favorite is below 0 degrees.

What is their Hogwarts house and/or MBTI personality?

I’m not going to even try to figure out MBTI.

I am 98% sure Gavin is Gryffindor. He’s also the only character in LASER that I have sorted as Gryffindor. (I haven’t sorted absolutely all of them, though.)

Are they more likely to worry about present problems, or freak out about the unknown future?

Gavin worries about the present, not the future.

What is their favourite thing to drink?


What is their favourite color? Least favorite?

Green! Least favorite would probably be burgundy.

What is a book that changed their life?

Gavin, what books have you actually read? 

I don’t know. I’ll think about this.


Now for Mr. Carp.

Elden Carp is the weapons teacher at LASER. He’s an elf– think like Legolas, not Santa’s elves.

Once again, I have no picture. NO WAIT HOLD ON.

How did you come up with this character?

Mr. Carp was also made up on the spot. LASER needed a weapons teacher.

Again, no.

Pride goes before a fall. But he very good with all weapons.

List 3 things that would make them lose their temper.

Mr. Carp does not lose his temper. Ever. It’s like he’s not human… oh wait.

What is their favourite type of weather? Least favorite?

Mr. Carp loves the rain. Thunder and lightning are glorious.

Hurricanes are not glorious.

What is their Hogwarts house and/or MBTI personality?

You know what? I’m going to say that Elden is Gryffindor, too. He could also be Ravenclaw, but I really think he’s more Gryffindor.

Are they more likely to worry about present problems, or freak out about the unknown future?

Mr. Carp worries about present problems but it’s not really worrying as much as it is thinking about them in order that they might be dealt with properly. He doesn’t worry. Ever. It’s like he’s not human… oh wait.

What is their favourite thing to drink?

He can’t stand yellow.

What is a book that changed their life?

War and Peace by Tolstoy. He started devouring the classics ravenously after that.

Beautiful People– Victoria Clairvoy


First of all, there is a poll open for who else I should do this tag with this month. I’ll leave the poll open for a while longer, but not much longer so get your votes in!

Second, I got a comment on the poll post from a beta-reader who told me that she would actually rather hear about a few of the characters I don’t have listed as an option.

Victoria Clairvoy is the director of the division of LASER that is in the story. She’s one of the adults in the story, an authority figure and role model to Riley.

I’ve never thought about what she looks like enough to locate a Pinterest picture. *thinks about this*

Do they want to get married and/or have children? Why or why not?

It’s not that she doesn’t want to get married. She is just very content with life as it is. Children would be nice, but she’s okay not having kids, too. She has 50 apprentices to look after and train, anyway.

What is their weapon of choice? (It doesn’t necessarily have to be a physical weapon.)

Pistols and secrets.

What’s the nicest thing they’ve done for someone else, and why did they do it?

Hmm… Vicky? What is the nicest thing you’ve ever done?

Oh. She helped with research of a cure for lycanthropy. Why? Because it’s a cure for being a werewolf of course.

Have they ever been physically violent with someone, and what instigated it?

Yes, she has.

What instigated it? A threat. Compromise safety and she will do anything to stop you.

Are they a rule-follower or a rebel?

Depends on the instance. Most of the time, Clairvoy is the one making the rules and she prefers them to be followed.

Are they organized or messy?

Organized with clutter. She keeps things neat, but there is often three coffee cups, a jar of mismatched pens, and piles (not stacks– piles)  of important papers on her desk at any given time.

What makes them feel loved, and who was the last person to make them feel that way?

Someone listening to her and taking her seriously. Someone being there for her. Someone who wants to help her, no matter the costs.

Someone, a long time ago, did all this. And then left without warning or reason.

Since then, the closest anyone has done to that is her second in command, Miss Mina Jenness.

What do they eat for breakfast?

Yogurt and granola.

Have they ever lost someone close to them? What happened?

Clairvoy lost her grandfather to lycanthropy when she was 22. Yes, that means being a werewolf.

What’s their treat of choice? (Or, if not food, how else do they reward themselves?)

Hmm. Coffee ice cream and mystery-romance novels.

18 Life Tips: Share To Save Humanity

Beautiful People– Talking about Hunter


It occurs to me that I have never done a Beautiful People tag with Hunter Jackson, who is one of my absolute favorite characters in LASER.

Now, part of this is because he has major spoilers as a character and there were a lot of times that the questions would’ve revealed those spoilers.

But this time, the tag is asking questions about childhoods. I think I can tell you about Hunter’s childhood without spoiling too much.

For anyone wondering what Hunter looks like, I’ve always thought he looks like Liam Hemsworth’s Gale.


On to the questions!

What is their first childhood memory?

A night on a mountain top, under a sky full of stars and a bright yellow full moon. Sitting on his dad’s shoulders, looking up into the heavens. The sounds of crickets when all else was silent. The amazing howls of wolves that silenced the crickets.

What were their best and worst childhood experiences?

The best experiences were when his family would spend time together– they loved to do things outside, like camping, biking, and hiking.

The worst childhood experience for Hunter was when his parents got divorced.

What was their childhood home like?

Hunter has lived in the same house ever since he was born. It’s small, but it never needed to be bigger because there were only four of them– Hunter, his big sister Kara, their parents– and then there were only three.

What’s something that scared them as child?

Hunter was scared of being alone and no one liking him.

Who did they look up to most?

Hunter looked up to his dad the most. His dad stood up for what he believed in and didn’t let anything get in the way of that. He didn’t let anyone tell him he couldn’t do something just because he was different.

Favourite and least favourite childhood foods?

Favorite food was cheeseburgers. With everything on them. Except onions.

Least favorite food was onions. Couldn’t stand onions, always picked them off of pizza, never ate onion rings.

If they had their childhood again, would they change anything?

The one thing Hunter would want to change, he couldn’t. He couldn’t change the fact of his parents’ divorce, couldn’t make it so it never happened.

What kind of child were they? Curious? Wild? Quiet? Devious?

He was a loyal follower. And he was a bit wild definitely, but the trouble he got into was usually Isabella’s idea, not his (Yes, this is Isabella Bronze, MC of LASER. She and Hunter were best friends when they were little).

What was their relationship to their parents and siblings like?

Most of the time, the relationships were good. He and Kara had their share of sibling squabbles but the fights never lasted long. And Hunter loved his parents. Boring answer, I know.

What did they want to be when they grew up, and what did they actually become?

Hunter wanted to stand up for what he believed in. He wanted to protect his friends and protect people like him. He wanted a world where discrimination didn’t exist.

Hunter wanted to start a revolution.

You’ll have to read LASER to see what he actually became.

The Little Engine Tag– a new tag created by my arch nemesis

Hi, reader-peeps!

So, I was tagged by Matt Black for a tag he created– The Little Engine Tag!

Tag picture. I never saw this movie.

Now, when I was tagged, Matt called me his mortal enemy. I am flattered and a bit stunned, because I was fairly certain that I didn’t actually have any enemies, mortal or otherwise. But if I did have one, it probably would be Matt.

So, thank you, sir. I think.

(He hopes I will reveal some sort of weakness by answering these questions. I have my doubts about that.)

The rules:

  1. Each answer you give to a question has to be more than two sentences long. Or at the very least, you have to make those two sentences meaningful.

  4. You know how sometimes in quiet classrooms, they’ll be that one guy clicking his pen fifty times a second, and it’s annoying to everyone else? Yeah, don’t be that guy. This doesn’t apply to this tag so much, but more to life in general.

1.) What’s one of your biggest pet peeves?

The only thing I can think of right now is when people don’t spread peanut butter smoothly or get it out of the jar correctly and it’s all messy and just WHY?

It drives me crazy.

2) What is your favorite song at the moment?

3) Who is your favorite blogger?

Um… picking two. Cait of Paper Fury and Liam of This Page Intentionally Left Blank.  Cait writes wonderful book reviews and books about dragons and she wants to be Queen of the Universe and All Things Cake. Liam, according to Matt, is off battling pirates(?) and sea monsters(???), so his blog has not been very active lately. But it is still a very good blog and at one point, he wanted to rule the world too. (What can I say? I gravitate toward powerful people.)

4) What’s the nicest thing you’ve seen someone do recently?


Is it bad that I can’t think of anything? It’s just that there’s so much nice stuff I see people doing.

My sister knits baby stuff for people at our church.

My brother is sweet to his younger sisters (my two youngest hobbits).

5) What’s something you regret doing?

Staying up too late. Repeatedly. It’s something I’m still battling.

6) If you could take only three items with you to a deserted island, what would they be, and why?

Assuming I have food and water already, computer with wifi, notebooks, and pens.

7) What past fad do you think should make a comeback?

Um… ooh! Tamagotchi!

Which… it may still be a fad now, but not nearly enough.

I had a Gigapet years and years ago, which is basically the same thing. It was a little dog. The only thing I didn’t like was that it died if I didn’t feed it before I went to school. Because then I couldn’t feed it until after school and that is apparently too long for a Gigapet to go without food.

But it was fun all the same.

8) How would you describe the perfect date?

Bookstore raiding. Not literal raiding, as I’d prefer we paid for our haul, but a trip to a bookstore, either followed or preceded by dinner (I like Chinese food).

This month’s theme is writerly resolutions.

It is the new year, after all.

That happened to me

What were your writing achievements last year?

Well, I won NaNoWriMo. I started editing LASER and got through Draft 2. I queried with picture books and took part in three Twitter Pitch events.

Tell us about your top priority writing project for this year?

LASER. I am in the middle of Draft 3 edits and I would absolutely love to be completely done editing or at least very close by the time summer starts. LASER is my baby and I need to finish it and try to get it published.

List 5 areas you’d like to work the hardest to improve this year.

  1. Less Procrastinating (working on it)
  2. Better Sleep Schedule (this is actually related to writing, though indirectly)
  3. Read More (as Stephen King once said, if you don’t have time to read, you don’t have time to write)
  4. Don’t tell people about my new WIPs! (you’d think I’d have learned this by now…)
  5. I want to continue to write better stories. I want to learn how to manipulate reader-emotions better and I want to learn how to choose the right word and I want to create amazing characters. And I want to enjoy doing it. Because if I don’t enjoy it, then what is the point?

Are you participating in any writing challenges?

New Year’s Short Story Challenge 2016, if we do it. I’m not even sure about NaNoWriMo. If I do NaNo, it will probably be more for motivation and less for 50K.

What’s your critique partner/beta reader situation like and do you have plans to expand this year?

I have two or three critique partners right now. These are my alphas, who read the earliest draft possible in all its hideous glory and will also read the finished product in all of its much-less-hideous glory. They also help me brainstorm from time to time.

As for betas, I have none. I’m debating on whether or not I want to find some. On the one hand, more eyes to help me get all the bugs out. On the other, betas take up more time. And then, which draft do I send them? The completed one or the next readable one? (Any thoughts on betas, guys?)

Do you have plans to read any writer-related books this year? Or are there specific books you want to read for research?

I plan to read Write You Novel from the Middle by James Scott Bell. I believe it involves plotting from the midpoint first. I’ve always had trouble with midpoints, so I thought this would be an interesting read.

Pick one character you want to get to know better, and how are you going to achieve this?

There’s a girl, currently nameless and mostly storyless. Her plot bunny attacked me the other day. I’d like to get to know her, perhaps.

If that plot bunny is not ready to be chased, there is a group of about six characters for the sequel to LASER. I met most of them back in 2011 and 2012. Their story may be the next one to be told.

Do you plan to edit or query, and what’s your plan of attack?


Editing is continuing what I’ve been doing and fixing/improving LASER as best as I can and chronicling how I do it here.

As for querying… research potential agents, write query letters and synopses and pitches, panic, compose emails, panic, hit send then feel relief but also excitement to the point of jumping every time my email notification goes off.

Toni Morrison once said, “If there’s a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.”  What are the books that you want to see more of, and what “holes” do you think need filling in the literary world?

This is a difficult question to answer. Because it’s not like there’s an actual thought process for me of “Why are there no books like this? I know! I should write one!”.

I write what I want to write and I’m not trying to fill a “hole” or anything like that. I really just want a good story.

So maybe that’s my answer. There aren’t enough good stories in the world and there never will be. What makes a story good is subjective. The point is, some reader somewhere wants to keep reading good stories, wants to wander the library or bookstore looking for a new favorite, and it is my desire to give them a good story.

What do you hope to have achieved by the end of 2016?

I want LASER finished and I want to query with it and it’d be nice if I could get an agent or a publishing contract… yes, I know I don’t have much control over that.

I want to start a new story and maybe finish the first draft.

That’s really it, but they are large and ambitious goals.

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle. Yes, I know this one isn’t Christmas-y/winter-y, but the very first chapter with the hot chocolate and everything…


2.) Favorite wintery/Christmassy Snacks

Haystacks. Which is basically peanuts, chow mein noodles, and melted butterscotch chips all mixed together and plopped into piles to set. And then you eat them. Easy enough recipe.

Jam thumbprint cookies. Sugar cookie recipe that you roll into a ball, push your thumb into, put jam in the thumbprint part, and then bake. These are lovely with raspberry jam.

Mint anything. And this is one I do not get to eat much of, if at all, as my sister is allergic to mint and the smell alone sets the allergic reaction off. But I love peppermint bark and mint M&Ms.

3.) Favorite Hot Drinks

How many am I allowed to pick?

How the Grinch Stole Christmas, both animated and non-animated. I’m kinda sentimental about these ones.

Bahaha my favorite scene in this movie by far! "But if I moved the loathing til 9, I would still have time to lay in bed, stare at the ceiling and slip slowly into madness...but what will I wear??!":
And it’s quotable.

Christmas with the Kranks is the only “adult” Christmas movie I like. I am apparently extremely picky in the category of adult movies.

Prep and Landing. Which is just awesome.

I don’t really have a lot of crafts that I like to do specifically this time of year, but knitting while watching a Christmas movie is delightful. And there’s always the traditional paper chain.


So, several years ago, when my hobbits were smaller, Mom and Dad went Christmas shopping and we offspring stayed at home and made Christmas ornaments out of cereal boxes and… GLITTER.

WRITE FUEL: What do you eat/drink while writing?

Kristoff and Sven trying to get ice out of the water; this song might be my favorite, helped by the fact that little Kristoff and Sven are in it! <3

I love eating ice. Ice in water, ice in diet coke, ice in milk… There’s just one problem with eating ice.

Why Some People Always Feel Cold While Others Are Always Hot
This is a year-round problem, too, not just cold months. I sometimes have to drink something hot, too.

WRITE SOUNDS: What do you listen to while writing?

I love listening to music, just whatever I’m obsessed with at the time. I can’t always listen to music while I’m writing, though. Sometimes, it’s just too distracting.

I also recently found an ambiance-site that plays ambiance from various fictitious places and different enviroments. You’d think someone with 7 younger siblings wouldn’t want or like ambiance, but this is really nice. My favorite thus far is this one.

WRITE VICE: What’s your most debilitating distraction?

The internet. Which I’m sure is what most of you would say, too.

WRITE HORROR: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you while writing?

This past summer, July 26th, I believe (yes, the fact I remember the very date should tell you just how bad it was), I got a rejection letter and then my laptop died within the hour.



We were able to save everything from my dead laptop and I got over the rejection letter, but still. That was bad.

WRITE JOY: What’s the best thing that’s ever happened while writing or how do you celebrate small victories?

The best thing that’s ever happened… often, that involves my alpha/beta readers letting me know that I got the emotional effect I was trying for– which sometimes involves all caps yelling at me but that’s awesome.

Actually, I don’t really celebrate much at all. I proclaim my achievements to the world and revel in a feeling of numb satisfaction. Then I move on to the next thing.

So, I truthfully get too excited and want to tell the world about what I write. But if I do tell the world, I lose interest and momentum. Those in the know about WIPs is kept to a minimum.

WRITE SECRET: What’s your writing secret to success or hidden flaw?

Secret to success? Writing community, specifically, my critique partners. I have three of the best writing buddies in the world and then I have a huge writing community outside of that. Everyone encourages each other and I would not be the writer I am today without all these awesome people. Cake for you!

Hidden Flaw? I’m scared to write male POV. After one spends 7+ years writing it incorrectly and was more recently having trouble writing just a male side-character… nothing against any guys out there (I really do like most of you), but I don’t understand you well enough to write a male MC possibly ever again. Never mind that the sequel to LASER has a male MC…

Um… you know, I’m not sure. Possibly too much hubris, just judging by the way I can’t think of anything. That’s not annoying, though, right?
